Proper skin care may not guarantee a flawless complexion.
But a good skin care regimen may aid in warding off
bacteria that worsen adult acne. If you love scrubbing
for its squeaky-clean feel, think twice. It can render
more damage to your already-blemished skin.
Acne affects, according to some, up to 95% if teenagers
at some time in their teen or early adult years. It can
be serious and debilitating, mild and easy to control, or
usually somewhere in between. The market for acne cures is
huge, billions of dollars.
Herbs such as chamomile, lavender, juniper, bergamot,
dandelion root, and burdock root can be used to reduce
toxicity and improve the overall condition of the skin.
Echinacea and poke root are often used for their
anti-inflammatory properties and red clover may be
beneficial for its estrogenic action. Witch hazel has
excellent astringent properties and may be very effective
on acne.
Prescription topical medicines can result in side effects,
the skin may look worse for a while before hopefully
improving. Other side effects include stinging, burning,
redness, peeling, scaling or discoloration of the skin.
Similarly some prescription oral medicines can have side
effects such as increased tendency to sunburn, upset
stomach, dizziness or light-headedness & changes in skin
color. Also some drugs decrease the effectiveness of birth
control pills making it necessary to use a backup birth
control method.
Retinoic Acid may be used alone or in combination with a
benzoyl peroxide preparation. Retinoic acid is derived
from vitamin A, which is an important nutrient in the
maintenance of healthy skin. Vitamin A reduces the blockage
of oil glands and is therefore very useful in the treatment
of whiteheads and blackheads. It can cause itchiness and
redness, especially if the skin is exposed to strong
amounts of sunlight. As with benzoyl peroxide, retinoic
acid needs to be used for an extended period of time
(at least six months) and it may be several weeks before
any initial improvement is noticed.
One popular myth about acne is that tanning will clear it.
It may seem so at first, but soon you will notice that your
tanned skin becomes less pliable, making it less able to
shed oil and dead skin cells, which clog your pores. Your
acne will become worse, not better.
There are a number of vitamins and minerals that can be
used to improve the look and condition of your skin. The
mineral zinc, and vitamins A, C, and E, and B-complex
vitamins like vitamin B6 are often used to support acne
treatment, as these vitamins are very important for the
health of your skin. Eating foods that are rich in sulphur
may also be helpful as sulphur helps to cure acne. Garlic
and onions both contain a good supply of sulphur. Your
health care provider may also recommend that you avoid
eating sugar, fried foods, or foods that have a high fat
content. Also eliminate any sugar based carbonated
beverages.
