4. Thyroid

Yes, there is a relationship between thyroid imbalance and acne. I’ve had a thyroid problem for over 55 years and have struggled with acne. I also have high blood sugar (a thing called Metabolic Syndrome X) and an adrenal problem and a thing called PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). They all are part of the endocrine system which controls hormones and can cause low sex drive, can cause acne, mood swings and higher levels of testosterone. The mood swings can cause aggression. There is another rarer condition called Cushing’s Syndrome which also can cause acne, mood swings, and high levels of testosterone.
By the way, I’ve been on all types of thyroid medication…Synthroid, Levothyroxine, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Unithroid, Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid and Wes-Throid. The best medications to make a person feel better and have less problems are Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid and Wes-Throid. There is a nationwide shortage of Armour Thyroid so my doctor has me on Nature-Throid and if my pharmacy runs out of Nature-Throid I’m put on Wes-Throid. I never did well on Synthroid, Levothyroxine, Levoxyl, Levothroid and Unithroid. I always felt sick on these and continued to have symptoms of low thyroid.

I’ve done some research on this myself recently because I wanted to know if my loss of sex drive was do to an imbalance in thyroid and if my crazy period could also be related to an imbalance in thyroid (the answer was yes to both of them)
3. Thyroid affects hormonal activity including testosterone.
1. Higher levels of testosterone can result in more acne.
2. An imbalance in hormones in general can cause mood swings, so yes.
4. Thyroid directly affects hormonal activity.

My dermatologist is trying to see if that’s my diagnosis. Of course to confirm her theory I have to go to an endocrinologist. But Thyroid or Adrenal or ovaries secreting wrong amount or not enough of a type of hormone function then yes.
